Primary Care Team returns to Freshers Events to encourage student registrations
31 October 2024
The Primary, Community and Intermediate Care Clinical Board at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is supporting university students living in Cardiff to access healthcare service appropriately whilst residing at their term time address.
Motivated by a commitment to raise students’ awareness of the services available to them, PCIC Clinical Board has been working closely with Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and University of South Wales to share information on the Primary Care services available in the community.
‘Primary Choice’ is an ongoing campaign aimed at increasing awareness of Primary Care services to the public with an area of focus on educating students about services available as they be differ to those available at home, encouraging students to use services more efficiently and to utilise the most appropriate clinician within the Multi-Disciplinary Team. As part of this campaign, the Clinical Board has given universities information to distribute to their students directly, attended Freshers events to direct students to services and encourage GP registration, and developed a suite of resources, hosted on Padlet with specific student content that can be used in GP practices and by the Emergency Unit and GP Out of Hours service. The Health Board further encouraged students to register with a GP practice following an increase in Emergency Unit attendances. The Health Board developed a video with an emergency medicine consultant and shared on social media.
The Primary Care Team supported over 1,457 students with the GP registration process and raised further awareness of the services available in community pharmacies such as the common ailment service, Pharmacy Independent Prescriber, contraception service and emergency medication supply. 473 students have accessed practice websites using the QR codes specifically designed for the Freshers events.
The Health Board will continue to share content with the Universities and via the Health Board social media channels signposting students to the most appropriate service first time. You can download our current and upcoming resources here.
